About COSMOPOLIS

The story of an encounter...
In the year 2000 Brussels was the European Capital of Culture. The university was present in the program through different activities of science popularization. We headed a project called Crossing Brussels, in which an urban laboratory (three transformed buses) entered neighbourhoods with a week-long fieldwork combining science, art and community activation. It was clear that urban studies needed to confront the full complexity of the city and therefore had to cross borders of the academic institution, scientific disciplines and cultural representations.

Birth of an interdisciplinary urban research team
The group gradually established itself as an interdisciplinary research team analysing urbanity, processes of ‘glocalisation’ (globalisation and localisation) and the relationship between urban space, society and culture. Since then, COSMOPOLIS grew both in size and in thematic approach. Our members have backgrounds in Philosophy, Geography, Architecture and Urban Planning, Sociology, History, Cultural and Leisure Studies, Arts, Human Ecology, Political Sciences, Anthropology ...

COSMOPOLIS at the Free University of Brussels
COSMOPOLIS is linked to the Department of Geography of the Free University of Brussels (VUB), where our main educational activities are situated. Our teaching forms part of three types of curricula: a) residential bachelor and master programs of the VUB, b) international joint master programs of which we are coordinator and c) special programs for target groups.

Besides research and education, COSMOPOLIS also provides services to public authorities, citizen networks and to the general public.

Active member of the UAB Urban Studies Network
The UAB Urban Studies Network is a network of researchers linked to the Free University of Brussels and the Erasmushogeschool within the University Association Brussels. The goal of the Urban Studies Network is to maximise research and educational synergies.
COSMOPOLIS City, Culture & Society is centrally involved in the UAB Urban Studies Network as Prof. Dr. Eric Corijn, director of COSMOPOLIS, is also the chair of this interdisciplinary network.
