The Auto Industry in Belgium: Plant Closings and Preliminary Impacts.Cosmopolis Lunch Seminar with AJ Jacobs, BCUS Visiting Research Fellow

18 May 2017 , Department of Geography, room F4.66, 12.00 -13.00

Over the past 20 years, Belgium has experienced the shuttering of three major automobile production plants (Renault Haren-Vilvoorde GM-Opel Antwerp and Ford Genk) and the major downsizing oat a fourth (VW Vorst/Audi Brussels). This presentation provides an introductory examination of the factors fueling these closures and explores some of their preliminary impacts of these events. The study was based upon: 1) a historical review of the auto industry in Europe: 2) an analysis of factory and company; and 3) site visits and interviews with local government and firm representatives connected to these four factories and the Volvo Ghent Car Plant.
