Vacancy: Postdoc coordinator and lecturer Master in Urban Studies

The VUB-ULB Master in Urban Studies is a new 120 ECTS programme that will start October 2017. Jointly offered by the two main Brussels’ universities - the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) – and offering a strong interdisciplinary perspective on urban studies, students follow a core trajectory of shared courses and have the freedom to specialize by individually selecting elective modules and courses.

In order to support the coordination and further development of this programme, we are looking for a postdoctoral coordinator and lecturer to:

  • Actively support the day-to-day academic coordination of the Master in Urban Studies.
  • Participate in the teaching for the programme, in particular the course units Urban Analysis I and II (methods seminar with fieldwork), Excursion I and II (one-week-excursion to a European city/region) and the supporting seminars for the first-year Master courses Urban Social Geography and Geographies of a Globalizing Europe.
  • (Co-)supervise Master theses of students enrolled in the Master in Urban Studies.
  • Run the Master thesis seminar and coordinate the thesis supervision process with the involved supervisors from different departments in the two universities.
  • Support the development of the Internship module and a European network of internship partners, both for research and professional internships.
  • Develop research activities in the domain of interdisciplinary urban studies, leading to relevant publication output.

Applicants must have:

  • Completed a PhD in urban studies, or in a related discipline such as human geography, spatial planning and mobility, urban design, history, architecture or criminology.
  • Knowledge and expertise on key urban challenges and the state of urban studies, proven by relevant publication output and/or other research activities. 

  • Teaching experience within higher education.
  • The ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Strong communicative and organisational skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of Dutch and French is an advantage.

Conditions of employment:

This is a one-year position (with possibility for renewal pending sastisfactory performance and continued funding). The position is intended to be full-time (38 hours per week), but part-time and work sharing options can be negotiated. Starting date: 1 October 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.
