Vacancy: postdoc coordinator and researcher Brussels Graduate School of Urban Studies

1 May 2017 , Application deadline. Start position: 1 October 2017.

The Brussels Graduate School of Urban Studies is a new initiative of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) that aims to offer research and professional training for advanced Master and PhD students in the interdisciplinary domain of urban studies.

It is open to all advanced Master and PhD students at the VUB with an interest in urban studies. Urban studies is one of the research and educational priority areas of the VUB and the Graduate School is closely linked to other urban initiatives, such as the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies (www.urbanstudies.brussels), the Brussels Studies Institute (http://www.bsi-brussels.be/en) and the two-year Master in Urban Studies that is jointly organised with the Université libre de Bruxelles (www.masterurbanstudies.eu).

It is within this context that we are looking for a postdoctoral coordinator and researcher with strong organisational skills to develop the Brussels Graduate School of Urban Studies and to engage in interdisciplinary urban studies research, ranging from writing research proposals and publishing research output to presenting at academic conferences and public engagement. In particular, the postdoc will be expected to:

  • Act as the day-to-day coordinator of the Brussels Graduate School of Urban Studies, in close collaboration with the coordinators of the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies.
  • To develop, organize and monitor Graduate School activities - specifically, research proposal writing workshops, reading seminars and a yearly Brussels Summer School in Urban Studies – and to propose innovative and interesting new activities in the domain of urban studies.
  • To represent the Graduate School both within and outside of the university.
  • To develop research activities in the domain of interdisciplinary urban studies, leading to relevant publication output.
  • To write and to collaborate (with members of the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies as well as other researchers) on writing research proposals to be submitted for external funding.

Applicants must have:

  • Completed a PhD in urban studies, or in a related discipline such as human geography, spatial planning, urban design, history, architecture, criminology, sociology, political sciences, economics or applied linguistics.
  • Knowledge and expertise on key urban challenges and the state of urban studies, proven by relevant publication output and/or other research activities.
  • The ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Strong communicative and organisational skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of Dutch and French is an advantage.

Conditions of employment:

This is a three-year fixed term and full-time position (38 hours per week), although part-time and work sharing options can be negotiated. Starting date: 1 October 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.
