Workshop at the European Parliament: Democratizing the urban space: the role of cultural organisations in Istanbul

7 December 2016 , 15h00 - 18h00 (14h30 registration). European Parliament; Altiero Spinelli building (ASP, Place Luxembourg side), Room: ASP5E1

Today's cities are subject to constant change due to diverse processes like gentrification or migration flows. In this context, the role of cultural organisations has become more crucial than ever. The purpose of this workshop is to question the transformation of everyday life space in Istanbul at the intersection of culture and politics from an urban perspective. Cultural organisations, like DEPO and SALT, play a crucial role in opening the urban space for alternative uses and making it accessible to marginalised groups in society, combating censorship and favouring contacts with public authorities. The state of the cultural and art scene in Turkey will also be discussed at the workshop.

hosted by MEP Ernest Maragall, Rebecca Harms and Helga Trüpel
